Origin
Rylara Scelade is one of the most recent members of the Beancryptids, once even being referred to as the “new girl in town” by Vee. It is unknown how exactly she entered the Beancryptids pocket dimension— she told Stage that she “fell into a portal,” but whether or not she was truthful has not been confirmed.
Introduction
Her first appearance was off-screen via a note left for Stage in the church’s donation chest, introducing herself as the woman living in the nearby mushroom house, asking to talk with some church staff— Stage replied offering to meet up soon.
A few days later, Rylara was physically seen by Stage putting donations in a chest, concentrated on trying to “center” them. Upon being introduced to Stage face-to-face, Rylara appeared shocked at Stage’s appearance, stuttering and cautiously asking questions. Stage’s nonchalant kindness and reassurance put her at ease, however.
As Stage and Rylara talked, Rylara revealed the Beancryptids world resides in a pocket dimension, one she supposedly “fell into” while taking a walk. Stage asked what the portal looked like, but Rylara was unable to answer, citing that she “didn’t get too good of a look at it, since [she] fell in,” blaming her clumsiness.
Meeting Other People
While exploring the church, Rylara spotted Crispy and Vee swimming in front of Stage’s house; she quickly asked if the people were drowning. Stage said they seemed to be fine, but offered to introduce Rylara. Rylara accepted.
Upon meeting and talking to Vee and Crispy, Rylara was seen writing in a notebook, stopping only to confirm that she was new and that the mushroom house was hers. Rylara followed Stage and put the book away when Stage began showing her sheep, Rosewater, to the others.
Around this time, Meg arrived, asking to see the sheep. Crispy and Vee approached to greet her while Rylara and Stage wandered off to get Fauna, a fox Rylara gifted Stage offscreen, set up by a fence. Stage then rejoined the group, Rylara hesitating before following.
Upon hearing Meg refer to themselves as “zombie-dude,” Rylara pulled her book out again, indicating that she wrote the nickname down.
Introduction to the Church
When Crispy noticed the church and asked to see it, Rylara put her book away to follow Stage and Crispy, inviting Vee and Meg along. She took a moment to write before they went inside. Vee froze by the door, unsure.
During Stage’s explanation of Chumtism, Rylara fell back to help Vee through the door, silently attempting to comfort them.
Upon being asked what she does, Rylara paused before saying she’s, “in a way, kind of a novelist,” hedging before hastily clarifying that “[she’s] not published or anything.”
Crispy asked about her notebook, and Rylara revealed she had been writing down everyone’s names. This was both to prevent forgetting and to keep them for future stories.
Partway through the tour, it was revealed to Rylara that death is not permanent in the Beancryptids pocket dimension. She reluctantly began writing this down.
Sensing her growing discomfort, Crispy stepped in and comforted Rylara by making a pact with her— they would never die.
Around this time, Stage asked if the new members would like to join the church. Vee retreated outside to get some air, and Crispy followed. While they were gone, Rylara asked what church members do. Stage listed some duties, the one Rylara fixated on being upkeep of server records.
During this conversation, Meg dropped one of their heads on the floor by mistake— Rylara accidentally picked it up. After a moment of silent terror, she gave the head back before quietly asking permission to swear in the church. It was granted, leading her to cautiously ask “what the fuck was that?”
Rylara was assured that this was normal by both Stage and Meg, though she tried to disagree— she was cut off, though, as Crispy and Vee returned. Crispy announced she was interested in joining the church, effectively changing the subject.
Joining the Church
Stage brought Rylara and Crispy to the cauldrons and told them about the baptism process. Crispy announced she wanted to be baptized that day— Rylara, deciding she had nothing to lose, agreed to do the same.
While waiting for Stage to get the armor prepared for them, she watched Crispy make music, remarking that she “[knew] someone at home who would love this.” Vee asked who she had at home. Rylara replied that it was “a lot to get into.”
Right before the first baptism, Rylara asked Greg— the only extra witness to the baptism— if it was true that they lived far away. When Greg confirmed this, she gave Greg some pumpkin pie so they wouldn’t be “hungry from [their] travels.” She then quickly took her seat.
Rylara let Crispy get baptized first, cheering for her new friend and joining the others in throwing gifts. During her own baptism, Rylara asked Stage to be her Chumtoad Protector. Stage agreed.
Once Rylara was baptized and Greg woke up, she gave Greg some mushroom stew to “revitalise [themselves]”. She then toured the Sanctuary with Crispy and Stage until Crispy went home to Novaros.
Life Back Home
Soon, Rylara and Stage went to see Rylara’s mushroom house. They started chopping down trees and chatting for a while, Rylara eventually asking about the tower nearby. Stage informed her that it was “just sort of a random Rapunzel tower thing” Meg was building. She replied by saying it was her friend Juliette’s favorite movie.
Stage asked about who Rylara had waiting back home. She answered Stage by saying she had “a couple brothers, and Juliette, who’s [her] best friend.”
